Ozdín: Vrch Hrad, Castle and Local Customs

Nature

Ozdín lies in the valley of a right-bank tributary of the Ipeľ. The area around Ozdín has deciduous forests with abundant game. Below the Evangelical church of Ozdín stands a large oak tree estimated to be 500 years old. There is a fire pit next to the shelter on the path to Vrch Hrad. Ozdín Castle dates from the 13th century; the area around its ruins is suitable for hiking and picnics. Ozdín Castle can be reached from the Evangelical church via a passable forest path; the ascent takes about 45 minutes.

Culture

Ozdín has a wooden bell tower built in 1784 as a work of traditional folk craftsmanship. A wooden mill stands in a stone-lined stream in the centre of Ozdín, near the municipal office. The Evangelical church of Ozdín was built in 1813 on the site of a Gothic sacred building dating from the 15th century. It has a solid tower with a Gothic core. The neoclassical altar in the Evangelical church of Ozdín features a painting of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane by František Gyurkovits.

Local Customs

Every winter, Ozdín hosts local feather-plucking gatherings at which participants make feather dusters. Hot tea with rum and corn served with poppy seeds, nuts or sugar are served at these gatherings. Every year, Ozdín maintains the tradition of erecting and later taking down maypoles. In Ozdín, Children's Day includes an ascent to Vrch Hrad. A fire is also lit in Ozdín to mark the end of the Second World War.
