Poltár: Churches, Bridge and Nature at the Foot of the Slovak Ore Mountains

Poltár lies at the foot of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on the northeastern edge of the Lučenec Basin and in the asymmetrical valley of the Poltarica. The landscape and regional connections include the 30-kilometre Poltár–Rimavská Sobota route, which was created as a separately designated cycle path.

Culture

The Evangelical Church in Poltár dates from 1791. Its walls contain architectural elements from the 15th century that have been built into them. The Evangelical Church in Zelené also has a clearly documented origin: it dates from 1835. It is associated with a white-stone ensemble featuring three human figures, as well as a statue of a guardian lion.

In Zelené, the Most cestný v Zelenom crosses the Ipeľ River. The bridge is designated as a protected technical cultural monument and is considered the third-oldest surviving bridge of its kind in Slovakia. Another historical connection lies in glass production: the foundation stone was laid in Poltár for the construction of a glassworks producing utility glass, and production in the first glass furnace began on 22 April 1971.

The POLTÁRICA folklore ensemble is part of the region’s living traditions. Together with DFS Kukučky, it organises its own Advent performance about customs and traditions from Saint Lucy’s Day to Christmas. At events and competitions in Poltár and the surrounding area, POLTÁRICA also presents folk customs, traditions, songs and dances from the Novohrad region, as well as from the cultural heritage of the surrounding Gemer and Podpoľanie regions.

Nature

Protected plant species can be found in the Poltár area at Poltársky rybník. The only kaolin deposit in Slovakia is also located in the Poltár area. Nearby lies Kúpna baňa, a protected area with rare plants and animals.

In the vicinity of Poltár, Ranč Megi in the Prievrana district offers horseback riding. During the season, Ranč Megi also organises children’s riding camps and traditional Western shows there. In addition to natural areas, this means that clearly identified activities and events are available in the immediate surroundings of Poltár.

Kokava-Línia is located in the Poltár District, a tourist area in the western Slovak Ore Mountains. It is situated about 40 kilometres from Lučenec and Rimavská Sobota and is visited mainly in winter, particularly by guests from nearby Hungary.
