Veľká Ves – Hotels, Landscape and Historic Churches

Veľká Ves is located in the northern part of the Lučenec Basin, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Kriváň stream. The village lies below Skalica Mountain; its cadastral area extends from 210 to 340 m above sea level. The geographical location of Veľká Ves is thus defined by the valley, mountain and elevation range.

Landscape

The abandoned settlement of Konteska, located to the north, belongs to Veľká Ves. A pavilion was opened at Konteska on 6 June 2015. From the observation tower at Konteska near Veľká Ves, the Mátra Mountains on the Hungarian border, Lučenec, Kalinovo and surrounding municipalities can be seen. The observation tower at Konteska can be reached on foot, by bicycle or by car. Small-scale tourism infrastructure for public use by residents and visitors to the municipality was planned for the observation tower at Konteska on the outskirts of Veľká Ves. After its legal approval, the observation tower was opened to the general public.

Culture

For Veľká Ves, a parish with the priest Peter at the Church of St. Nicholas is documented for the years 1332 to 1337. The foundation stone of the new Church of the Holy Family was consecrated on 8 July 2000 by Mons. Eduard Kojnok, Bishop of Rožňava. The Evangelical church in Veľká Ves was built in 1772 as a towerless Baroque-Classical toleration church; a tower was added in 1802. On three sides of the main room, it has a wooden gallery supported by carved columns. Its coffered parapet features scenes from the life of Christ painted on wood. The Evangelical church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Nature and Trails

Wild geese and snipes breed in the sessile oak forests and adjacent fields of Veľká Ves. A cycling educational trail is considered to be in good condition. The ascent of Skalica took place for the second time on 6 January 2017 and for the third time on 6 January 2018.

History and Traditions

Historically, pottery and decorative wheelwrighting were among the local occupations. Brdárska kapustnica was held in 2018 with competition teams and again in 2022.
