Hotels in Uhorské: History and Nature in the Slovak Ore Mountains

Uhorské is located in the southern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, in the valley of the Uhorštiansky stream. The Stolické vrchy section of the Slovak Ore Mountains is nearby. The village’s history includes traditional crafts, historic buildings and a musical heritage, while the landscape is characterised by oak forests, the Uhorské Reservoir and the observation of white and black storks.

History and Culture

Historic woodworking in Uhorské included the production of barrels, troughs and various wooden parts for carts and ploughs; this is documented for the year 1770. Wheelwrighting and the production of turned wooden objects were also still widespread in Uhorské in the period after the First World War. Cimbalom music became a popular musical tradition in Uhorské.

At the Uhorštiansky Mill above the village, there had been an original water intake to a large mill wheel since 1570, powering the wheels of the entire mill. Another historic building is the former manor house in Uhorské. It was built between 1810 and 1812 as spacious accommodation for the estate owner, the last feudal landowner, Farkaš-Szentiványi. After 1848, the municipality took over the former manor house; the building was reconstructed several times, its interior was remodelled and it was adapted to new needs.

The church in Uhorské stands on a hill in the central part of the municipality, near the cemetery. It is a Neoclassical church with Baroque elements and was built between 1803 and 1808 on the site of an older wooden church dating from 1610. The church is in very good condition and serves its religious purpose.

Nature

The eastern and northern parts of the Uhorské area are predominantly covered by oak forests. The extensive forest area around Uhorské offers edible mushrooms as well as forest fruits, including blackberries and rose hips. White storks have been breeding in Uhorské since around 1960 and successfully raise two to three young birds there every year. Black storks breed in Ceriny and Farkaška.

Uhorské Reservoir

The Uhorské Reservoir is managed by the Slovak Anglers’ Association as a carp-breeding or fish-rearing pond. The reservoir covers 3.17 hectares and is stocked with carp, zander and pike. One third of its shoreline is inaccessible and unsuitable for fishing. The reservoir was built in 1960–1961 and expanded in 1982–1983. This gradually also led to the creation of a recreational and tourism centre.

Transport and Connections

Uhorské is served by bus connections; the first bus stop was established there in 1948. From Uhorské, there is a possible connection to the recreational area of Kokava nad Rimavicou.
