Chyžné: Hotels, Church Art and History

Chyžné combines sacred art with local memory and clearly designated trails. The most prominent landmark is the Roman Catholic Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, a national cultural monument dating from the second half of the 13th century. In and around the village, you will also encounter evidence from various periods as well as routes whose course, length and duration are specified in concrete terms.

Culture

Medieval wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century have been preserved in the presbytery of the Church of the Annunciation. The church also houses a late Gothic winged altar from 1508, created in the workshop of Master Paul of Leutschau. When the wings of the Annunciation altar are open, they reveal the Visitation, the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi and Saint George.

The Evangelical church also preserves distinctive furnishings of its own. It was completed and consecrated on 6 November 1786. Inside, there is a portico-type altar dating from around 1800. The altarpiece depicts the Transfiguration of Christ; a painting of the Last Supper is considered the church’s most valuable painting.

History

The memorial room dedicated to Samo Tomášik opened on 5 September 1997 as a permanent exhibition of historical archival documents and objects. It provides information about the history of Chyžné and about the life and work of Samo Tomášik. Another connection to him is the vicarage next to the Evangelical church: it was a place where Samo Tomášik lived and worked. His grave and gravestone are located in the local cemetery in Chyžné.

The village’s mining and ironworking past is also linguistically present in the local landscape. It is reflected in names such as Banský vŕšok, Hutné and Klinčiareň.

Trails

The Chyžné–Dlhý diel–Chyžné circular hiking trail is 17.2 kilometres long, marked in green, and listed with a stated duration of 4 hours and 50 minutes. The length, marking colour and time indication make the scope of this named route transparent, without requiring any further trail characteristics to be assumed.

For cycling, the Chyžné–Malý Kohút mountain bike route begins in Chyžné. On the Chyžné–Malý Kohút route, you reach a turn-off to the Klepaná skala rock viewpoint with a shelter and cross. In addition, cycle route 5607 connects the Ochtinská aragonitová jaskyňa, Jelšava and Chyžné over a distance of 13 kilometres.

Gothic Route

Chyžné is listed from 1 July to 29 August 2026 on the Jelšavský and Rimavský circuits of the Gothic Route. This time-limited listing complements the local church and memorial themes with a broader route.
