Kameňany: Medieval Frescoes and Karst Landscape

Kameňany combines a rich cultural heritage with a distinctive karst landscape. The Evangelical church, historic evidence of local crafts and history, and the plateau above Kameňany give the village several distinct and clearly recognizable facets.

Culture

The Evangelical church in Kameňany dates from the mid-13th century and has Romanesque foundations. Inside, it preserves frescoes from the first half of the 14th century and from the 15th century. Among them is a depiction of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and Saint Anne, known as Metercia. The church is also included in the Jelšava tour of medieval wall paintings. Opposite it stands a historically significant Neoclassical building of the former Latin school, designated as a cultural monument. Next to the church is a Rococo-Neoclassical bell tower from the early 19th century.

History and Crafts

Kameňany historically had a pottery tradition. From 1866 to 1871, a Slovak amateur theater operated here. The area's older economic and industrial history also includes the iron ore deposits around Kameňany. The extracted iron was formerly processed in steelworks. These landmarks thus span everything from craft production and amateur theater to the raw materials that shaped the village's surroundings.

Nature

The Kameňany Karst Landscape is the plateau above Kameňany and is considered the most interesting karst area of the Jelšava Karst. It is characterized by large bowl-shaped sinkholes measuring up to 600 meters in diameter. The Hlavište karst spring lies at the foot of the Kameňany Karst Landscape. Its average discharge is 20 liters per second.

Cycling Route

On the Kameňany–Tvrdošovo cycling route, the trail initially follows a paved road in the direction of Rákoš. After approximately 1.5 kilometers, it turns left onto a paved forest road. This change in surface and the described turn are part of the route's specific course.

A local specialty of Kameňany is a distillate made from cornelian cherries.
