Babinec: Culture, Landscape and Hotels in the Slovak Ore Mountains

Babinec is located in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains on a flat ridge between the Rimava Valley and the PapÄŤa stream. The settlement thus combines a clearly definable landscape with a multifaceted cultural history reflected in handicrafts, the museum, the church and the bell tower.

Landscape

The area around Babinec is deforested; there is an oak forest in the northern part. The village is also connected to a cycling route: the Teplý Vrch–Hrušovo–Kiadice cycle route continues in the direction of Babínec and then on to Kyjatice.

Culture

Flax processing was one of the oldest occupations of the inhabitants of BabĂnec, especially the women. In the first half of the 20th century, spindles, loom heddles and chests made of split beechwood were produced there as home-based work. The chests were used to store clothing and grain. There was also a tradition of linen weaving and making rag rugs in BabĂnec.

The museum exhibition “Od ľanu k plátnu” introduces visitors to the tools that the ancestors of the inhabitants of Babínec used to process flax for the production of linen. Alongside the traditional products, the focus is therefore also on the implements and the craft context of flax processing.

The local culture also includes the Evangelical church of BabĂnec. It is a Classicist church building from the late 18th century. Its nave has a flat wooden coffered ceiling with late-Renaissance-Baroque rustic ornamentation of stylized flowers and leaves; this ceiling was transferred from an older building. The organ has a three-part case with Baroque acanthus ornamentation and dates from 1739.

The bell tower of Babínec is likewise a Classicist building from the late 18th century, complemented by late Baroque elements. The bell in the bell tower was cast in 1813 by B. Stephanides of Lučenec. The cultural and social event “Stretneme sa pod Turničkou” is regularly held at the bell tower.
