Jesenské: Hotels, Observation Tower “Jeden strom” and Hiking Trails

Above the town, Jesenské has a 13-metre-high observation tower named “Jeden strom”. It was completed in June 2025 and is fully open to the public. The tower offers a 360-degree view; in clear weather, the High Tatras can also be seen. An easy detour from the main trail leads to the observation tower, which is part of the hiking trail network in the Cerová vrchovina. The official route to “Jeden strom” leads over Širkovský hradný kopec.

Hiking

A 3.75-kilometre route from the centre of Jesenské to the “Jeden strom” observation tower leads through a valley and an area inhabited by European sousliks. In addition, blue hiking trail 2644 begins at Jesenské railway station. It runs via Širkovce, Širkovský hrad, Gemerské Dechtáre, Senná and Ragáč; it is 18 kilometres long.

Nature

One-third of Jesenské lies within the NATURA 2000 bird protection area “Vtáčie chránené územie”. The southwestern part of the cadastral area of Jesenské borders the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The Cifra site of European importance protects the European souslik. Entry by vehicle is prohibited in this area, while movement on foot is unrestricted.

Jesenské has bilingual information and orientation boards at nine locations, in Slovak and Hungarian, which are also intended to help tourists find their way around the municipality. The Jesenské information centre sells tourist maps of Jesenské, the Rimavská Sobota District and the surrounding area, as well as a hiking map of the municipality’s cadastral area.

Culture

Jesenské is home to the Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary, originally a Baroque building dating from 1737. The church was damaged by fire in 1825. The Reformed Church in Jesenské was built in 1898 in the Neoclassical style on the site of an earlier medieval church.

Jesenské is also home to the Neoclassical manor house “Jesenské - klasicistická kúria”; it is listed in the Slovak register of monuments under number ÚZPF 970/1. The Jesenské cemetery contains wooden post grave markers with finials bearing symbols of local production from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Jesenské also has a memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars.

History

The railway line through the valley of the Rimava River was put into operation on 5 September 1874. A small reinforced-concrete Ropík-37 bunker stands near Jesenské by a railway guardhouse.

The traditional “Stavanie mája” event took place in front of the cultural centre in Jesenské on 30 April 2026. On 1 May 2026, Jesenské hosted the ninth edition of the “Jarná cena Ceroviny” cycling race.
