Hostišovce: Find a Hotel and Discover the Karst Landscape

The cadastral area of Hostišovce is part of the Drienčanský Karst protected area (SKUEV2366), which covers 1,281.92 hectares and is subject to protection level 2. The area of Hostišovce is predominantly hilly and partly forested, and lies between the valleys of the Western Turiec and the Blh. To the east, it extends into the relic landscape of a high plateau and consists of andesites.

Nature and Trails

The Drienčanský Karst educational trail is 7,540 meters long and leads through easy terrain. More than ten interconnected cycling routes with a total length of 98 kilometers are available in the vicinity of Hostišovce. The Drienčanský Karst area stretches between Drienčany, Hrušovo, Striežovce, Španie Pole, Hostišovce, and Budikovany.

Next to the Hostišovce municipal office stands a new wooden pavilion with seating. The information boards at the pavilion present Hostišovce, regional cultural monuments, and places of interest connected by the local cycling routes.

History and Traditions

Hostišovce was first mentioned in 1333 under the name Gesztus. In 1528, Hostišovce was destroyed by the Turks.

Hostišovce had a local tradition of wax processing, in which wax was pressed from honeycombs. Household woodworking included, in particular, spindles and ploughs, which were also sold by peddlers in more distant areas. Even in the mid-20th century, the inhabitants of Hostišovce wove canvas and patterned fabrics.

The historic fruit-growing tradition of Hostišovce included distilling plum and cherry brandy from surplus fruit.

Architectural Heritage

Masonry houses from the 19th century have been preserved in Hostišovce. They are characterized by a gallery projecting along the house and supported by a row of columns. The residential house at Hostišovce 001-02 has a Gánok gallery supported by a row of columns beneath the roof overhang.

The Hostišovce 44 folk dwelling is a stone-and-brick building from 1771. The stone folk dwelling at “Roľnícky dvor Hostišovce 38” is a single-story building from 1875 with a cellar, a three-part layout, and a rectangular floor plan. According to the history of the municipality, the interior furnishings purchased from a tradesman from Hnúšťa are still in use today.

Church

The Evangelical bell tower of Hostišovce is a masonry building from the beginning of the 19th century. It is designed as a Neoclassical tower and is characteristic of the Gemer region. The Evangelical church of Hostišovce was built in 1793 as a towerless toleration church.

The furnishings of the Evangelical church include a richly ornamented wooden Protestant gallery on three sides of the nave. Its ornamentation is Late Baroque and dates from the mid-18th century. The church also has an organ with Rococo ornamentation dating from 1760 to 1780. The Late Baroque altar from the second half of the 18th century has a central painting and lateral sculptures of the Apostles Peter and Paul set within a columned architectural structure.
