Šimonovce: Hotel, Tolerance Church and Heritage Zone

Šimonovce is home to the Reformed Tolerance Church, which was built in 1790 on older foundations. It is the oldest monument in Šimonovce.

Landscape

Šimonovce lies in the southern part of the Rimavská kotlina basin, in the Rimava floodplain. The unforested municipal area comprises flat and hilly terrain with pronounced terraces. In addition to flat sections, there is hilly terrain, while the terraces stand out as a distinctive feature of the municipal area. Tertiary marls, claystones and sandstones are covered by river deposits and loess loams. Thus, both the floodplain setting and the different landforms and geological layers are part of the spatial character of Šimonovce.

Culture

The heritage zone of Šimonovce was designated in 1996. It contains an almost intact linear settlement arranged around a broad, elongated rectangular village green through which a road runs. The predominantly 19th-century buildings lining the road consist of houses with three or more rooms. These houses are built of mud bricks and fired bricks, plastered and limewashed. They are grouped around the widened road and, together with the village green, form the characteristic spatial arrangement of the heritage zone.

Historic Buildings

The Classicist manor house in Šimonovce was built in the first half of the 19th century. It is a single-storey building with a rectangular floor plan; on the courtyard side there is an original columned loggia. Its condition is considered poor, and one of its façades has been modernized and extensively altered. The vernacular dwelling at Šimonovce 109 is also a brick house dating from 1863. The vernacular dwelling and its grounds at the same address were declared a national cultural monument in 1963. Thus, different types of historic buildings stand side by side in Šimonovce: the Reformed Tolerance Church, the Classicist manor house, and the vernacular dwelling with its grounds.

Cycling

A cycling route from Rimavská Sobota via Jesenské and Šimonovce to the Hostice Reservoir runs on paved roads and is suitable for various types of bicycles. The route connects the places mentioned with the Hostice Reservoir and passes through Šimonovce across the described landscape.
