Dolné Zahorany: Church, History and Cycling Tours

Dolné Zahorany lies at the transition between the Rimavská Basin and the Lučenská Basin, on a tributary of the Suchá stream. The village combines this geographical location with regional history, a church and a cycling route.

Nature

The subsoil in the municipality consists of Tertiary clays. A particular botanical detail concerns ruža ovisnutá: it grows here at an altitude of 260 metres above sea level. Both details describe Dolné Zahorany from different perspectives – one through the geological composition of the soil, the other through the occurrence of a specifically named plant at this elevation.

Culture

The village's buildings include the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. It is a late-Classical single-nave building dating from 1884–1885. Its façade design incorporates Neo-Gothic elements. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose.

Another landmark in the village is a cast-iron cross from 1892, which stands on a brick pedestal. It complements the ecclesiastical architecture as an independent historical object. Since 1774, an ecclesiastical motif has been the historical symbol of Dolné Zahorany.

History

Dolné Zahorany was first mentioned in 1341 under the name Hegmuky. The settlement was ravaged by the Turks in 1566. After this destruction, the inhabitants founded a new settlement in a higher location. This sequence – the early mention, the destruction in the 16th century and the subsequent refounding at another, higher site – forms a significant part of the recorded history of the village.

Transport

IDS BBSK bus route 171 connects Rimavská Sobota, Dolné Zahorany, Veľké Dravce and Fiľakovo. Dolné Zahorany is therefore a stop on a named connection between these four places.

Cycling

A 62-kilometre circular route from Poltár to Rimavská Sobota passes through Dolné Zahorany. The cycling route runs along paved roads as well as field and forest paths. Mountain bikes and trekking bikes are suitable for the route.
