Malý Krtíš: History and Hotels in the Ipeľ Basin

Malý Krtíš lies in the Ipeľ Basin, in the valley of the Krtíš stream. The village combines a clearly structured landscape with a varied settlement history whose traces date back to the Middle Ages. Since 1251, Malý Krtíš has been documented under the name “Curtus, alia villa Cvrtus”.

Geographical location

The centre of Malý Krtíš lies at 175 metres above sea level. The cadastral area ranges from 162 to 281 metres. A varied, deforested hilly landscape with flat ridges extends around the village; these ridges were formed by Upper Tertiary deposits. The area contains brown earth, in some cases illimerised soils, alluvial soils and fluvial soils. One named spring is “Mädokýš”; it lies directly beside the bed of the local watercourse.

History

The historical names add to the picture of the village’s long history: “Kyskwrthes” dates from 1482, “Maly Krtýš” from 1920, and the Hungarian name “Kiskürtös” has also been recorded. From 1554 to 1593, Malý Krtíš was occupied by the Turks. At the beginning of the 17th century, the village was completely deserted. Between 1715 and 1720, Malý Krtíš was again mentioned as a settlement and soon afterwards developed once more into a municipality.

Culture

A distinctive historical structure is the village bell tower in Malý Krtíš. It is a simple, masonry rural building with a square floor plan dating from 1848. The village bell tower contains a bell from 1824.

The economic past is also documented in several details. In 1828, Malý Krtíš had 29 houses and 266 inhabitants who worked in agriculture. Sand for glassmaking was mined in Malý Krtíš. During the capitalist era, the village had a steam mill. The old mill in Malý Krtíš, originally steam-powered, is falling into disrepair. The municipal coat of arms symbolically refers to coal and quartz-sandstone seams, as well as to agriculture.

The municipal library and the cultural centre together form the cultural centre of Malý Krtíš. For sports activities, the village has a football pitch and a multifunctional field with artificial turf. On 31 August 2024, a performance was scheduled for the municipal day event “Deň obce Malý Krtíš”.
