Podzámčok: Dobronivá Castle, Bell Tower and Folklore

The ruins of Dobronivá Castle give Podzámčok a clear historical landmark. They probably originated after the Tatar invasion in the second half of the 13th century as a guard structure on an old trade route south of Zvolen. The site thus combines a specific setting associated with former security and transport routes with other cultural sites and preserved traditions.

Getting there

From the end of a road, a short, unmarked 500-metre path leads to the ruins of Dobronivá Castle. The castle grounds include a recreational park with benches, a fire pit and an information board. This means that the same historic site contains both the structural remains of the castle and a simply equipped outdoor area.

Landscape

The western part of the Podzámčok municipal area extends into the Neresnica Valley. Beech forests grow on the western ridges of the Javorie Mountains. The valley and forested ridges are therefore among the different landscape forms found within the municipal area.

Culture

In the centre of Podzámčok, the Church of Saint John the Baptist stands on a hill. It was consecrated on 16 November 2002. Near the Church of Saint John the Baptist, the wooden bell tower of Podzámčok stands on a hill; it was built in 1868. The bell tower contains a rare late-Baroque bell from 1782, made by the Banská Bystrica bell founder Ján Juraj Knobloch.

Traditions

The “Na sv. Jána” folklore festival has regional importance and preserves folk traditions and customs. The Podzámočan folklore group makes a lasting contribution to this effort: every year, it prepares programmes in which it presents dances, songs, customs and traditions from Podzámčok.

The group’s repertoire also includes the programme “Podzámocká svadba”, which it presented at a nationwide showcase of village folklore in Likavka. Podzámočan also preserves original songs from Podzámčok and presents local traditions and costumes in themed programmes. This makes both musical heritage and forms of local customs visible.

The “Na svätého Jána” folklore festival was announced as its 29th edition. Performances by children from Podzámčok and the Podzámočan folklore group, as well as a bonfire, were scheduled for 20 June 2026.
