Sielnica – Find a Hotel Amid Culture, Nature and Cycling Trails

Sielnica lies in the northwestern part of the Zvolen Basin, in the valley of the Sielnica stream. The eastern foothills of the Kremnica Mountains shape the landscape around the village, while the forests around Sielnica consist, among other trees, of firs, oaks and beeches. The mountains of Lavrin, Pustý Hrad, Čierné Brdo and Kozlinec are located nearby. Thus, the village and its immediate surroundings bring together distinct landscapes, historical traces and marked trails.

Landscape and Nature

The natural area includes the Site of Community Importance Mláčky (SKUEV0186), which partially overlaps with the cadastral area of Sielnica. Mláčky is part of the Natura 2000 network and is subject to the second and fifth levels of protection. The wooded Sielnické vrchy are largely accessible; several routes offer marked trails for different hikes.

The wider regional area also contains named landscape and cultural destinations. Šášov is classified there as a ruin. The combination of the surrounding mountains, wooded areas and a protected Natura 2000 site gives Sielnica’s geographical setting several clearly distinguishable facets.

Culture and History

Sielnica was first mentioned in writing in 1250. Traditional settlement architecture includes stone three-room houses. A manor house in the Renaissance and Baroque styles was built between 1780 and 1790 for the administrator of the chapter estate. The manor house contains a unique historic library of the noble Ostrolúcky family from Ostrá Lúka.

Another prominent historic building is the Church of the Holy Spirit, built in 1942. It contains the tower of a Gothic church dating from 1397. A Renaissance fortification was built around the church in 1630; part of the wall survives, with a simple rectangular loophole. Another historical trace is a chapel built in Sielnica in 1912.

Above Sielnica, on Mount Žiar, lies the Sklenný zámok archaeological site. It is listed in the state register of cultural monuments of Slovakia.

Hiking and Cycling

The marked hiking trail 5500M connects Sielnica with the spa town of Kováčová. Another marked trail, route 8508, leads from Sielnica via Veľký Son to Danielová and is listed as 9 kilometers long. Several marked trails in the wooded Sielnické vrchy are also available for different hikes.

The cycling network also offers routes with different characteristics. In 2025, Sielnica was included in the ninth edition of the joint cycling event “Spoznajme sa na bicykli.” The route of this event is approximately 35 kilometers long and is suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. It is predominantly flat, includes gentle climbs and is also suitable for families with children.

Another cycling route leads from Sielnica to Skalka via Brestová and then via Tri Kríže. It runs along paved roads as well as field and forest tracks and is more suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes.

Events

The Beh oslobodenia race was held on March 22, 2025, for its 26th edition. On May 11, 2024, a thanksgiving march to Kremnica was recorded in Sielnica; a liberation march organized by the municipality of Sielnica to Kremnica is also mentioned for May.
