Zvolen – Cultural Monuments, Nature and Hotels

Zvolenský zámok is a Gothic building with Renaissance outer fortifications and is listed as a national cultural monument. The “Gothic Art” exhibition at Zvolenský zámok displays a collection of medieval sculptures and paintings comprising more than 80 sculptures and paintings. Zvolenský zámok can be reached on foot from the train and bus stations in Zvolen.

Culture

One of the notable historic complexes is Pustý hrad, a castle ruin above the confluence of the Hron and Slatina rivers. The fortified area covered 7.6 hectares, making the site one of the largest castles in Europe. Zvolen is also home to the original Romanesque church of Farský kostol Svätej Alžbety. It dates from 1244–1250 and is a national cultural monument. Štefana Višňovského Park lies below Zvolenský zámok; it contains a model of the Hurban armoured train.

Nature

Pustý hrad offers views over the Zvolen Basin and the surrounding mountain ranges. The Pustý hrad area, including the site of current archaeological research, is open to the public; the Pustý hrad educational trail leads there. The trail runs for 5.2 km through oak-hornbeam forests and features eight multimedia information panels about local fauna and flora.

Another collection awaits you at the arboretum. It is home to Slovakia’s largest rose collection, with 660 varieties. There is also an extensive collection of more than 500 species of cacti and succulents from South America. Different forms of nature presentation therefore exist side by side within the city: the forest and landscape area along the educational trail and the carefully maintained plant collections of the arboretum.

Activities

Tancujúce plte na Hrone is a leisure and educational attraction offering rafting on the Hron. The main route takes two hours, runs from Zvolen to the water sports camp in the municipality of Budča and uses specially prepared rafts for tourist trips, with 12 seats.
