Hronská Breznica: Hotel and nature at Demian

Hronská Breznica combines its location in the Hron Valley with the volcanically shaped Štiavnické vrchy and a history reflected in the railway, mining and rural settlement pattern. The elevation profile ranges from the river valley to the higher peaks of the surrounding mountains.

Nature

Hronská Breznica lies in the valley of the Hron River, on its left bank, in the Štiavnické vrchy at an elevation of 275 metres. The terrain ranges from the Hron Valley at 275 metres to Jaseňový vrch at an elevation of 765 metres. The Štiavnické vrchy around Hronská Breznica contain andesitic pyroclastics and other volcanic rocks; the mountain range was formed by volcanic activity.

The Demian Rocks contain a natural rock window. The Jasenica stream has a natural streambed and preserved bank vegetation, while stands of alder, willow and poplar grow along the Hron. The area is home to several species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and waterfowl.

Hiking

The 678-metre-high Demian above Hronská Breznica can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail. Demian offers a beautiful view of the towns and settlements in the Kremnica Mountains and of the Hron Valley.

The Pralesy Slovenska – Demian Nature Reserve is one of numerous parts of the Pralesy Slovenska protected area, designated in 2022. It protects a remnant of primeval forest on the northeastern slopes of the 685-metre-high Demian, east of Hronská Breznica on the northern edge of the Štiavnické vrchy. The educational trail can be reached by bus to the Hronská Breznica, otočka stop or by train to Hronská Dúbrava; from there, a 1.2-kilometre-long yellow-marked hiking trail leads south and east above the Hron.

Culture

The bell tower of Hronská Breznica was built in 1905. A stone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, a folk work from the 19th century, stands on the road towards Banská Štiavnica. Hronská Breznica was laid out as a linear roadside settlement; the early houses were made of wood, while later houses were made of clay and stone.

On 10 August 1873, service began on the narrow-gauge railway between the Hronská Breznica and Banská Štiavnica railway stations. In the past, the inhabitants of Hronská Breznica produced charcoal and supplied it to the surrounding ironworks. The mine tunnel beneath Mertanec was approximately 500 metres long; its entrance was filled in during the construction of Trate mládeže.

A bronze spearhead found on the rocky slope of Bučan, together with a leaf-shaped spearhead from an unknown find site, is dated to around 700 BC.
