Strečno: Castle, Váh and Observation Tower

Above the historic road between Žilina and Vrútky stands Strečno Castle, a preserved medieval castle ruin. Its walls house an exhibition on the prehistory and history of Strečno Castle and the surrounding region. The history of the village therefore does not begin only with the later memorials and religious buildings, but is also directly connected with the landmark above the village.

Culture

Access to Strečno Castle is provided as part of a guided tour with a lecturer. In 2013, a freely accessible recreation area with the medieval village of Paseka was created below the castle. Paseka consists of five small, fully equipped wooden houses with thatched roofs, a functioning bell tower and a well. The complex complements the castle visit with its own historical ensemble, whose individual elements are clearly distinct from one another.

The Váh is also one of the places where the surroundings can be experienced from a different perspective. The Plte Strečno rafting trip offers simultaneous views of Strečno Castle and Starý hrad from the Váh. It begins at the Bariérová landing stage and ends at the ferry in Strečno. The trip is led by an experienced raftsman, who talks about interesting facts concerning the history and traditions of rafting along the way.

History

Nearby, the ruins of Starý hrad rise in the Domašínsky meander of the Váh above Strečno Castle. Starý hrad was first mentioned in documents in 1241 as royal property. Another historical landmark in the village is the present-day masonry Church of St. Sophia, built in 1847. During the Christmas holidays, a movable Nativity scene is made accessible there every year.

The Monument to the French Partisans stands on Zvonica Hill in Strečno. A crypt beneath the monument contains the remains of 24 partisans. Memorial ceremonies commemorating the anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising are held every year at the monument on Zvonica. The religious site, memorial site and preserved castle ruins thus represent distinct historical points of reference within Strečno.

Nature

The Domašínsky meander natural monument protects the most prominent section of the Váh cutting through the Malá Fatra. A wooden observation tower stands on Špicák above Strečno. From there, there are views of the Žilina Basin, the ridge of the Malá Fatra, parts of the Kysuce Uplands and the Strážov Mountains. From the observation tower on Špicák, four castles can also be seen: Strečno, Starý hrad, Budatínsky hrad and Lietavský hrad.

Trails and Events

There are several described routes to the observation tower. The observation tower on Špicák can be reached via the yellow-marked hiking trail from the car park below Strečno Castle. A second access route is a green-and-white-marked educational trail that begins in the centre of Strečno. Both route descriptions are specific orientation points around Špicák, without their trail characteristics being described further.

Strečnianska mašľa is an ultramarathon and a tourist hike around Strečno. The route follows marked hiking trails and is offered over distances of 50 km and 25 km. The routes lead from Strečno into the Malá Fatra; part of the event takes place on marked trails through the national park. For cycling, the green-marked, relatively demanding Martin (ATC)–Strečno mountain bike route is also listed. It ends in Strečno below Strečno Castle.
