Prosiek: Karst Valley, Hiking Trails and Historical Heritage

Prosiek lies below the eastern part of the Chočské vrchy at the exit of the Prosiecka Valley. The village thus combines access to a karst valley with a short cycling route through the landscape and several historical landmarks. The different trail lengths and elevation gains are also clearly stated for day planning.

Nature

The Prosiecka Valley is a 3.5 km-long karst valley in the Chočské vrchy that emerges near Prosiek. At the end of Prosiek, near the entrance to the Prosiecka Valley, there is a paid car park that serves as a starting point for hikers and visitors to the valley. Prosiek and Kvačany serve as starting points for the Prosiecka Valley and the Kvačianska Valley.

Hiking and Cycling

The blue-marked cycling route No. 2407 runs directly through Prosiek. It is approximately 2.8 km long and follows field and forest paths. For longer tours, the Prosiek – Veľké Borové – Oblazy – Kvačany circular route connects the Prosiecka Valley and the Kvačianska Valley. This circular route is approximately 17.6 km long, has almost 700 m of elevation gain and can be completed in one day.

In addition, an educational trail runs through the Prosiecka Valley and the Kvačianska Valley. It comprises 12 stations with information boards covering geographical, biological and historical topics. Thus, alongside the routes, the natural and historical aspects of both valleys are explicitly a central focus.

Culture and History

Prosiek is home to the Roman Catholic Church of St. Elizabeth. It was built around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries and was first mentioned in 1397. Its present form was created through an extension in 1826, a neoclassical façade design in 1880 and the addition of a western tower in 1927.

The manor house of Prosiek originally dates from the late 16th century and was later remodelled in the Classical style. Another historical landmark is located at the entrance to the Prosiecka Valley: the Hrádok archaeological site is protected as a national cultural monument and comprises fortifications from the Iron Age and the Middle Ages.

The Prosiecka Valley itself also contains archaeological traces. Investigations near a cave and a spring uncovered a settlement from the Eneolithic period and a settlement from the later Roman Imperial period.
