Malatíny: Hotels, Manor Houses and the Liptov Valley Landscape

Malatíny lies in the western Liptov Valley, in the valley of the Malatianka stream. The village combines a historically shaped settlement landscape with tangible traces from several centuries, a distinctive view of the Low Tatras and a signposted connection for mountain bikes.

Culture

Part of Malatíny’s cultural heritage can be seen at the Museum of the Liptov Village in Pribylina: the permanent exhibition displays a granary built around 1830 from Nižné Malatíny. Several manor houses with different architectural forms and dates of origin are located in Nižné Malatíny. These include the wooden Jozef Nemešáni and Ján Nemešáni Manor House from the 19th century, the Baroque masonry Jozef Bukovinský and Zuzana Bukovinská Manor House from the 18th century, and the stone Mária Kohútová, née Fehérpatakyová, Manor House from the mid-17th century.

Also located in Nižné Malatíny are the wooden Neoclassical Rudolf Andaházy and Mária Andaházy Manor House from the 19th century, the masonry Zuzana Podhorányiová, née Ošková, Manor House from the second half of the 19th century, the wooden Gejza Oško and Petrolela Ošková Manor House from the second half of the 17th century, and the wooden Emil Fehérpataky Manor House from the end of the 19th century. There is also a masonry bell tower above Nižné Malatíny.

History

Among the historic settlements of Malatíny, Nižný Malatín was the oldest. During the First Czechoslovak Republic, weaving and basketry developed in Malatíny alongside agriculture. Another historical trace leads back to the period of the Slovak National Uprising: at that time, the Jegorov partisan unit was based in Malatíny.

Several archaeological finds also form part of the village’s history. An Almgren 68-type bronze fibula from the early Roman Imperial period was found in Nižné Malatíny. In spring 1850, bronze objects came to light on a hill in Nižné Malatíny. In 1927, a bronze object depicting a running lion on an arched frame was discovered on the property of the farmer Oško in Nižné Malatíny and donated to the Liptov Museum in Ružomberok.

Landscape

The central zone of Nižné Malatíny is designated as a historic landscape structure. The visual landscape is defined by panoramic views of the Low Tatras, considered the most important visual feature of the surrounding landscape. The area around Nižné Malatíny also includes forest vegetation, fields and meadows. Riparian vegetation along the Malatínka stream extends into the visual surroundings of Nižné Malatíny.

Getting There

Nižné Malatíny lies north of the I/18 state road and is connected to I/18 by the III/2345 regional road. The nearest railway station serving the municipality is located in the neighbouring municipality of Vlachy. From Nižné Malatíny, it can be reached on foot or by bicycle in 3–5.5 km, or by car in 5.3–6.8 km, corresponding to 6–8 minutes.

Cycling

Route 9406 Partizánska Ľupča–Malatíny–Liptovská cyklomagistrála runs through Malatíny. The connection is 5.1 kilometres long, marked in yellow and designated as an easy MTB route. It runs on asphalt, paved paths, forest roads and field paths, connecting Partizánska Ľupča with the Liptovská cyklomagistrála.
