Malé Borové: Hotels and the MTB/Trekking Circular Tour

The challenging 35.4 km MTB/Trekking circular tour “Cyklotrasa cez Chočské vrchy” passes through Malé Borové. Its route runs via Kvačany, Bukovina, Malatiná, Malé Borové and Oblazy back to Kvačany. The village is therefore integrated into a circular route that connects several named stations in a fixed order.

Landscape

Malé Borové is located on the southeastern slopes of the Skorušina. The village is also situated in a basin in the headwaters of the Sviniarsky potok. The location is therefore defined by both the slope side of the Skorušina and the stream’s headwaters.

Cycling

From Malé Borové, the route continues along the river through the narrow section of the Kvačianska Valley. At the turnoff to Malé Borové, there is a junction of cycle routes; this is where the Vrchárska cyklomagistrála No. 042 begins. The route is therefore characterized by both a valley section and the start of a numbered cycle route.

Culture

Borové originated in the 17th century as a dispersed settlement established by Gorals from the Orava region and was first mentioned in 1696. The settlement grew in the area around an old glassworks. From the 18th century onward, itinerant glassmaking was also practiced in Borové.

After 1786, Borové was divided into Malé Borové and Veľké Borové. The settlement of Novoť was incorporated into Malé Borové in 1882. Since the founding of Borové, agriculture and alpine pasture farming have been among the activities of its inhabitants. Historical local crafts included the production of sieves, flat wooden bowls (Opálky), baskets and birch brooms.

In 1952, the Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary in Malé Borové was consecrated. The flat wooden bowls are referred to as Opálky, alongside sieves, baskets and birch brooms as other historical local crafts.

Hiking

In the surroundings of Malé Borové, the water mills of Oblazy can be reached via hiking trails from Huty, Veľké Borové or Kvačany. Thus, in addition to the destination, three specifically named trail starting points are connected with the area.
