Turňa Nad Bodvou: Nature, Culture and the Turnianska Wine Route

Turňa Nad Bodvou brings together historic buildings, protected nature and a regional wine route within the town and its surroundings. The individual sites differ significantly and range from architectural history and nature to hiking connections and regional gastronomy.

Culture and History

The fortified Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century, probably on the foundations of an 11th-century church. Its frescoes had been painted over with white paint and were rediscovered in 1880 by the Hungarian writer Mór Jókai. The church is an important monument of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture. The Kaštieľ in Turňa nad Bodvou has also been preserved. It was built in the Renaissance style in the 17th century, has an L-shaped floor plan and two rounded corner towers on the main façade.

Nature

Turniansky hradný vrch is the only known site of Laxmann's bugleweed (Ajuga laxmannii). The Turniansky hradný vrch National Nature Reserve is a 13.78-hectare protected area with a karst landscape, characteristic geomorphological formations and rare thermophilic flora and fauna. Turniansky rybník is located northwest of Turňa nad Bodvou. It is part of an internationally protected bird sanctuary.

Hiking

A blue-marked hiking trail to the ruins of Turniansky hrad begins directly in Turňa nad Bodvou. The blue-marked ascent from Turňa nad Bodvou to the Hradná stráň saddle at an elevation of 350 m takes approximately 35 minutes. From the Hradná stráň saddle, a historic unmarked path with preserved traces of wagon wheels leads to Turniansky hrad. Turniansky hrad was built after the Mongol invasion of Hungary, probably in the first half of the 13th century. The fifth level of protection applies in the Turniansky hradný vrch National Nature Reserve; leaving marked hiking trails is prohibited. A 5¼-hour route through the Zádielska Valley and to Turniansky hrad ends in Turňa nad Bodvou.

Wine

The Turnianska Wine Route runs from Silická Jablonica via Hrušov, Jablonov nad Turňou, Hrhov and Dvorníky-Včeláre through Turňa nad Bodvou to Moldava nad Bodvou. It offers tastings of local wines combined with visits to natural and cultural monuments. The Turnianska Wine Route brings together gastronomy, history and hiking.
