Košická Belá: Hiking, Nature and Slovak Culture

Košická Belá lies in the northern tip of the Košice Basin region, in the valley of the Hornád River on a small plateau above the river.

Landscape and Nature

The landscape around Košická Belá is characterized by deciduous forests on the eastern limestone slopes of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Coniferous forests occur only in insignificant areas. The Volovské vrchy Natura 2000 site primarily serves to protect birds of prey and owls, as well as the red-breasted flycatcher (Ficedula parva), the collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) and other species. Sivec is a 781-meter-high limestone rock above the Ružín Reservoir. From the summit of this distinctive limestone rock, there is a view into the deep valley of the Hornád.

Hiking

In the village district of Košické Hámre, which belongs to the municipality of Košická Belá, a 4-hour-and-15-minute circular hike to Folkmarská skala begins and ends. From Košická Belá, a 3.5-kilometer locally yellow-marked connecting trail also leads to Nemcova dolka, where it connects to the Legionnaire Trail. In addition, the Roztoky educational trail is located within the cadastral territory of the municipality of Košická Belá. The two trail descriptions are therefore clearly different: a circular route with the same starting and ending point is presented alongside a marked connection to another trail.

Culture

The Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist in Košická Belá is a modern three-nave building from 1938 to 1941. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
