Košice-Okolie District: Hotels and Accommodation

Jasovská jaskyňa cave is located in Košice-Okolie District and is part of the Caves of the Slovak and Aggtelek Karst, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. At the same time, it is considered one of the most important caves in Slovak Karst National Park.

Nature

Herľany in Košice-Okolie District is known for the Herliansky gejzír, described as Europe's only cold geyser. It was activated by a 404.5-metre-deep borehole and produces low-temperature water. It currently erupts at intervals of 34 to 36 hours; each eruption lasts 25 minutes.

The Zádielska tiesňava educational trail is located in Slovak Karst National Park and in the Zádielska tiesňava National Nature Reserve. It provides information about the local flora and fauna, karst phenomena and the use of the plateau.

Kysacká jaskyňa is a 72-metre-long natural monument with stalactites, stalagmites and flowstone waterfalls. It also serves as an important wintering site for seven bat species. Rankovské skaly are protected volcanic rock formations in the Slanské vrchy mountains. A marked green hiking trail starts in Herľany and leads through woodland to the summit.

History and Culture

The Hámor in Medzev is a historic forge powered by running water. The Slovak Technical Museum manages it as a living technical monument and makes it accessible to visitors. The energy of the running water once powered forging hammers, bellows and air blowers for the furnaces.

The Premonstratensian Monastery of Jasov forms a Baroque ensemble consisting of the Church of Saint John the Baptist, the Premonstratensian monastery and a French monastic garden. The Premonstratensian monastery complex in Jasov is one of Slovakia's national cultural monuments. Visitors can tour the monastery on guided tours, including the church, former archive, library, halls, hunting salon, garden, convent and current exhibitions.

Kysacký hrad Castle was probably built at the end of the 13th century; the first references date from 1300. Jánošíkova bašta is a popular climbing area accessible from the municipality of Kysak via a red-marked hiking trail. The limestone rock formation lies above the Hornád Valley and offers views of the Hornád Valley, Humenec Nature Reserve, the Slanské vrchy mountains and the castle hill with the ruins of Kysacký hrad Castle.

Turniansky hrad Castle was founded no later than around the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Two important hiking trails lead to it: one starts in Háj and follows the yellow trail, while the other starts in Turňa nad Bodvou and partly follows the blue trail. Today, the castle is freely accessible to the public.

The Sieň bojovej slávy in Dargov offers a virtual tour. Groups of more than ten people can visit it by prior arrangement. The Nižná Myšľa archaeological open-air museum consists of two settlements and a burial ground with more than 900 graves located 200 metres from them.

The Medzev Observatory and Planetarium offers presentations and explanations in the planetarium. When weather conditions are suitable, it is also possible to observe the sky outdoors; there is also a permanent meteorite exhibition.

Hiking Trails and Sightseeing

The Hornád–Milič educational trail connects the municipalities of Trstené pri Hornáde, Ždaňa, Skároš, Nižná Myšľa and Vyšná Myšľa and is almost 61 kilometres long. It consists of several circular routes. A digital hiking map with GPS navigation is also available.

Wellness and Wine

Kúpele Štós has a complex of water and steam baths with a herbal sauna, eucalyptus sauna and Finnish sauna, a vitality shower, water walk, hydromassage pool and tepidarium. The grounds include a forest park with more than 200 species of rare trees and flowers, an artificial stream and cascades with a fountain.

The Máté Laczkó Szepsiho Wine Museum in Moldava nad Bodvou presents wine production, the wine route and historic cellars.
