Vyšný Medzev – Hotels in the Slovak Ore Mountains

Vyšný Medzev lies on the southeastern slopes of the Slovak Ore Mountains. The southern section of the valley has the character of a deep gorge, while the forested area is characterized by a distinctly modeled, wooded mountain landscape. Water-rich streams flow through the individual valleys. Thus, in Vyšný Medzev, a distinctive valley landscape meets a local history closely connected with mining.

History and Townscape

The first written mention of the two settlement parts of Medzev, Vyšný Medzev and Nižný Medzev, dates from 1427. Mining and metalworking were among the traditional occupations in Vyšný Medzev. Under Emperor Leopold I, the settlement received the status of a free, royally privileged mining town.

This development can also be seen in the townscape. The Vyšný Medzev heritage zone preserves a highly intact natural and settlement structure. The center consists of a row of burgher houses, while the rural surroundings are characterized by a more loosely arranged row development.

Culture and Monuments

The Vyšný Medzev town hall was built in the 17th century in the early Baroque style and was extended and remodeled in the 18th century. The Roman Catholic Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene dates from 1773. Its altar was originally located in Jasov Monastery.

Antlov hámor is part of the area’s technical and industrial past. The technical monument consists of a single-room rectangular building from the second half of the 19th century. Lucia Baňa is a former mining settlement and belongs to the municipality of Vyšný Medzev. It is home to a Secessionist wooden bowling alley from the early 20th century.

Hiking Trails and Nature Trail

A yellow-marked hiking trail runs through Vyšný Medzev. It continues via Gelnická cesta and Staré Košiare to Trohanka–Tri studne. A red-marked ridge route in the Volovské vrchy runs along the northern ridge of the forested area of Vyšný Medzev eastward to Kojšovská hoľa. Westward, this route runs via Zbojnícka skala to the Kloptaň viewpoint summit and onward to Jedľovec.

The nature trail through the Humelská Valley is 8 kilometers long. It begins in the village square of Vyšný Medzev at an information board with a description of the local history and a map of the route. At Múr, the nature trail includes a viewpoint. Between two water reservoirs, it leads to a reconstruction of a medieval smelting furnace and also to a medieval mine. Its stone, hand-hewn adit can be viewed through a barred entrance. The nature trail through the Humelská Valley is considered not demanding and is also suitable for less fit or older hikers.

In the Kloptáň area, at an elevation of 842 meters, lies the Turistická útulňa Jána Kruteka shelter, which can be reached from Vyšný Medzev. It is open and available for use year-round free of charge.

The Hudba na konci sveta festival takes place annually in the vicinity of Medzev.
