Medzev: Hámor, Museums and Planetarium

Medzev brings together natural landscapes and craft history in a single visit to the town. The Slovak Karst National Park partially extends into the Medzev area. Water-powered hammers have been operating on the Bodva since 1356; the relevant areas are now used for ice skating in winter and fish farming and angling in summer.

Culture

The town’s history of technology is reflected in the Hámor. The Hámor in Medzev is currently registered under the name “hámor Technického múzea” as an immovable national cultural monument under number 4380. The Hámor Technického múzea in Medzev is a two-fire, single-hammer, water-powered forge that originally served to produce agricultural tools such as hoes, spades, shovels, axes, nails and horseshoes. Visitors can watch demonstrations at the Hámor of the historic production of tools by forging with a water-powered hammer.

The Šugovský Hámor has its own opening period: it is open to the public from 1 April to 31 October. A visit must be arranged by telephone or in writing at least three days in advance. The period and the required advance booking are therefore an integral part of the visiting conditions for this Hámor.

Museums

The Múzeum kinematografie rodiny Schusterovej in Medzev was opened to the public on 1 November 2007 and operates year-round. It contains a comprehensive collection of cinematographic technology, an ethnographic collection and documents relating to Hámor production. Its holdings therefore bring together technical, cultural and documentary materials that address different aspects of the town’s history.

The planetarium in Medzev opened in 2013 and has 21 seats. Prior registration is advisable for a visit to the Medzev Observatory and Planetarium.

History

Another cultural landmark is the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Medzev. A valuable stone baptismal font from the 17th century can be viewed there.
