Šurianky: Church, Park and Radošinka Observation Tower

A plague column dating from 1773, reconstructed in 2002, stands in Šurianky. As a clearly dated local landmark, it provides a historical starting point before attention turns to the church, park, landscape and viewing point.

Culture

Another historical point of reference is the Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Its first documented mention dates from 1297. In 1637, it was rebuilt on the old foundations. Today, the church has a single-nave Baroque form; two side sections were added later. The sequence of the first documented mention, reconstruction and later additions can be considered separately. This allows the church to be viewed both historically and architecturally: the years mark its documented development, while the single-nave Baroque form and the later-added side sections characterize the building as described today. Both levels remain distinct from one another.

Nature

Behind the manor house lies Šuriansky Park in Šurianky: it is a protected historic park. The park is home to 33 tree species, including many non-native species. Šurianky lies in the Bojnianska pahorkatina subregion of the Nitrianska pahorkatina; this lies within the Podunajská pahorkatina in the Podunajská nížina. The Perkovský potok, which is important for water management, runs through the built-up area of Šurianky in a north–south direction. The classification into several landscape levels and the specific number of tree species describe two different scales: one the larger natural region, the other the composition of a single park.

The Radošinka observation tower is 15 metres high and consists of a completely wooden structure. The Radošinka observation tower stands at the boundary of the cadastral areas of Čab, Nové Sady and Šurianky. The tower can be reached via an unpaved access road located approximately 350 metres from a Class III road. The height of the tower and the approximate information about the access route are different points of orientation: one describes the structure, while the other describes the distance to the classified road.
