Veľké Zálužie: Culture, Castle Park and Hotels
Veľké Zálužie is located in the Nitrianska pahorkatina, which forms part of the larger Podunajská pahorkatina landscape unit. The municipality's area was already settled in the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC. Until the end of the 19th century, Veľké Zálužie developed as a small settlement with a toll station. This timespan connects the landscape with several clearly identifiable stages in the history of the settlement.
Culture and History
One of the prominent cultural monuments is the Marian Column in Veľké Zálužie. The Baroque column bears a statue of the Immaculata and dates from 1753. Since 1963, it has been registered as a national cultural monument under number 1565/1-2. Another historical landmark is the original medieval church of Veľké Zálužie, which was first mentioned in writing in a list of papal tithes from 1333 to 1337.
The Roman Catholic parish church of Veľké Zálužie was built in 1769 in the Baroque-Classical style and is dedicated to All Saints. It was extensively restored between 2003 and 2005. The main altar dedicated to All Saints, dating from the late 18th century, was reconstructed and returned to its intended use. The church contains various sculptures of saints, including depictions of Saint Joseph, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Nicholas, Saint Ambrose, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Beneath the church is a crypt where local counts are buried.
Castle and Park
The castle was built by the Forgách family as their family residence. It is an Empire-style building from the beginning of the 19th century, constructed on older foundations. Its floor plan is U-shaped, and the building has two storeys.
The castle park currently covers 9 hectares. It was laid out in the style of a natural landscape park with numerous gravel paths. The castle park area is designated as a protected natural monument.
