Výčapy-Opatovce: Vineyards, Nitra floodplains and living traditions

Výčapy-Opatovce lies in the Nitra Valley. The municipality’s territory lies at an altitude of 146–230 metres in the southeast of the loess-covered Nitrianska pahorkatina, in the Nitra floodplain and on the Nitra terrace. This brings together a river landscape, wine-growing and village culture within a close geographical setting.

Landscape

The wine-growing area near Saint Urban offers a view of Výčapy-Opatovce, the meanders of the Nitra and the opposite Tribeč Mountains with the distinctive Žibrica Mountain. The walk from the village centre to the wine-growing area near Saint Urban takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on the route chosen, and is approximately 1.5–2 kilometres long. The wine-growing area has a pavilion and a fire pit for grilling, but no drinking water or buffet.

The history of wine-growing is also part of the landscape. The historic vineyards on the hill west of Výčapy-Opatovce disappeared after 1960; a new vineyard was planted there recently.

Culture

Výčapy is home to the Roman Catholic Church of All Saints. It was built by the nobles of Seku and first mentioned in 1332–1337. Opposite the church stands a Baroque manor house commissioned by Prince Frigyes Hohenzollner in the mid-18th century. The Baroque Chapel of Saint Joseph dates from the early 18th century and stands in the cemetery of Výčapy. Opatovce Square is also home to a brick bell tower dating from 1815. A former Church of All Saints was incorporated into a new complex, where it forms the side chapel of All Saints.

The cadastral area of Výčapy-Opatovce contains traces of several eras. A Paleolithic settlement site was discovered there. Neolithic settlement associated with the Linear Pottery, Želiezovce and Lengyel cultures has also been confirmed. In addition, finds from the Roman period as well as Old Slavic and Great Moravian settlements have been discovered.

Local traditions also include musically presented customs. The NÁDEJ singing group performs, among other things, the harvest thanksgiving celebration with the presentation of the harvest crown, haymaking and love songs, spinning-room customs, and feather-plucking for a bride. The Nefelejcs group recalls the original Hungarian songs and customs of its ancestors and takes preserved, richly embroidered folk costumes out of the chests.

Events

The local wine-growing association organizes annual celebrations for the Feast of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers. The celebration includes a festive Mass and the traditional blessing of the vineyards. It takes place in the vineyards above Výčapy-Opatovce. At the Feast of Saint Urban on 23 May 2026, visitors were able to taste homemade wines from the region.

The cultural programme “Rok na dedine” is held in Výčapy-Opatovce in October and presents customs as well as magnificent folk costumes. The folklore festival of the same name takes place annually, with local groups and groups from surrounding villages performing. During the carnival season, the still-preserved custom of the “fašangoši” also takes place: boys walk through the village with an accordion, dance traditional dances in front of the houses and invite women and girls to dance.

Sport and routes

The sports hall in Výčapy-Opatovce is available to the public for sports, competitions, recreation and leisure activities with the operator’s consent. Its playing surface is intended for handball, football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton and floorball.

For cyclists, Ponitrianska Long-Distance Cycle Route No. 019 begins at the embankment near Výčapy-Opatovce. It runs from Výčapy-Opatovce towards Nitra along the grassy embankments of the Nitra. The route is a 74.9-kilometre red MTB route of medium difficulty and follows paved roads as well as field and forest paths.

Getting there

Výčapy-Opatovce lies on the main road between Nitra and Topoľčany. Výčapy-Opatovce also has a railway station named Výčapy-Opatovce.
