Dolný Ohaj: Culture, Cycling Routes and Hotels

Dolný Ohaj combines sacred landmarks, archaeological traces, cycling routes and traditional wine production, which is part of the local character. Between the church, chapels, historical finds and regional events, a multifaceted image of the village emerges, made up of specific sites and handed-down traditions.

Culture and History

A personal connection to the village’s history can be seen in the memorial plaque for the national politician Juraj Holček at the parish house. He served at this parish house from 1848 to 1865. The Chapel of Blessed Sister Zdenka is also located in Dolný Ohaj. It is considered the first chapel in Slovakia dedicated to her and preserves relics of Sister Zdenka.

The archaeological evidence reaches much further back. Dolný Ohaj is home to a Neolithic settlement of the Želiezovce culture. In addition, a grave find containing fluted pottery from the Eneolithic period was discovered and is associated with the Baden culture. Archaeological graves also provide evidence of a Slavic settlement and a burial site from the Great Moravian and post-Great Moravian periods.

One of the notable sacred buildings is the Neoclassical Church of St. Imrich. It was built between 1872 and 1876 on the site of a Gothic church that had been destroyed in 1708. Inside, the church has an altarpiece from 1928 by T. Ozoray from Nitra, as well as a wooden Baroque baptismal font from the mid-18th century.

Routes and Landscape

Three routes with different classifications are available for cycling in the village and its surroundings. Cycling route No. 5103 Okruh Dolný Ohaj is an easy green leisure route measuring 2.1 kilometres in length with an elevation gain of 13 metres. Route 8104 Dolný Ohaj–k meandrom leads to the natural attraction of the Chrenovka Meander natural monument. The Church and the Calvary complex are also among the sights along the cycling route Okruh Dolný Ohaj.

2102 Veľký okruh mikroregiónu Termál passes through Dolný Ohaj. It is classified as a moderately difficult sports route, covers a total of 55.6 kilometres with an elevation gain of 669 metres, and runs through ten municipalities.

Traditions and Events

The Juraj Holček Choir performs traditional songs from the region, Slovak folk songs and Christian songs. You can hear it at events held by the municipality, as well as at regional, national and church events. Singing together with the choir is also part of the programme at the celebrations on the eve of 1 May; a maypole is also decorated and erected in front of the cultural centre.

The wine tradition is also linked to the events calendar. On 23 May 2026, Púť na vinohrady included a walking pilgrimage to the Dolnoohajské vineyards. The walking pilgrimage was followed by a Mass at the statue of St. Urban in the Dolnoohajské vineyards. The 13th edition of the Ohajský Kenderáš music festival took place in Dolný Ohaj on 18 July 2026. Ohajský Kenderáš featured children’s inflatable bouncy castles and water football.

At Ohajské fašiangy, a traditional village home slaughter was demonstrated, and local slaughter specialities and wine from Dolný Ohaj were tasted. Alongside music, church events and village festivals, traditional wine production is therefore also part of village life.

Surroundings

The surroundings of Dolný Ohaj include the Starý Kláštor Monastery, Verestvín Mountain, the Szent Orbán-kápolna Church and Dlhý Vrch Mountain. The wider regional area also includes Csúzy-kastély Castle, Füri Zichy-kastély Castle, Ivolác Mountain and Pereš Mountain.
