Kmeťovo: Hotel, Žitavský luh and Church from 1882

Kmeťovo is situated in the Žitavská pahorkatina uplands on the right-bank floodplain of the Žitava. East of the built-up area, the Žitava flows in a riverbed confined by levees. The landscape, sacred architectural history and historical customs emerge here through specific names, dates and local sites.

Nature

Žitavský luh preserves the last remnant of the original meandering river course. It serves as a breeding and migration area for protected waterfowl. The Žitava Protected Nature Monument, PP Žitava, protects an old course of the Žitava with riparian vegetation as a valuable biological and landscape feature. The various references to the river thus identify both the preserved course and the biological and landscape significance of the area.

Culture

The Church of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary in Kmeťovo is a Neoclassical architectural monument of historical and cultural value and was built in 1882. The church contains an almost life-size statue carved from pear wood. A cross with a crucifix, made in Vienna after the First World War, hangs above the altar.

Several dated testimonies also stand outside the church. A marble cross dating from 1914 stands in the Kmeťovo cemetery. The town is home to a statue of the Holy Trinity from 1924, while a statue of Saint Urban from 1874 stands in the vineyards. In 1994, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Scapular and the three Košice martyrs was added to the church. The chapel contains an altar with a statue of Our Lady of the Scapular and a wooden wall relief of the Košice martyrs carved by Vašek from Mojzesovo.

Traditions

Kmeťovo's historical winemaking tradition included a devotional gathering held annually on the Sunday after the feast of Saint Urban at Stará hora. Kmeťovo also has a tradition of wine-tasting competitions dating back to 1978. Historical Christmas customs included fruit, pupáčky, kapustnica and fish on Christmas Eve. Historical Carnival customs centered on Carnival celebrations, especially masked balls.

Trails

The Žitavský luh educational trail is accessible from State Road 511 via the embankment and the Kmeťovo Bridge. On the accessible section of the educational trail, travel is permitted only on foot or by bicycle. A 28 km hiking route from Kmeťovo to Kolta bears route number 0710 and reaches Žitavský luh after 2.7 km.
