Pavlová on the Hron – Culture and Landscape

Pavlová lies on the left bank of the Hron at the foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills. The eastern part of the village lies on the deforested ridges of the hills, which are crossed by deep erosion gullies. In the western cadastral area, 200 hectares belong to the wet Hron floodplain. Pavlová therefore brings together riverbanks, hills and an extensive floodplain area.

History

Archaeological evidence in Pavlová indicates settlement since the Stone Age. An archaeological cemetery dating from the time of the arrival of the Hungarians was also excavated here. An entry from 1135 documents a mill in Pavlová on the lower reaches of the Hron as property of Bzovík Monastery. The history of the village is therefore shaped both by early traces of settlement and by a documented connection to a medieval mill.

The first Church of St. Lawrence in Pavlová dated from 1717. A new stone Church of St. Lawrence was built on its site between 1884 and 1888. The Church of St. Lawrence was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1960s with financial support from the residents. The church building thus brings together several clearly dated periods of the village’s history: the first church from 1717 and the new building from the late 19th century.

Culture

Pavlová belongs to an ethnographic group of six municipalities associated with a so-called women’s costume with a short skirt. The origin of this costume is dated to the period of Ottoman rule. The preservation and occasional presentation of the women’s costume with a short skirt is a significant element of Pavlová’s local national culture.

Local events also draw on cultural forms and community life. The Szikince Festival is an established event organized together with other municipalities on the banks of the Perec River. Concerts, puppet theatre and theatrical performances take place in the municipal park and on the stage. A folklore ensemble has existed in Pavlová since 2008; its performances enrich Pavlová’s community events.

The locally designated cycling infrastructure includes the Južným regiónom cycling route. It is intended for mountain bikes and classified as REKREA, meaning an easy route. The village is also served by regular bus route 404445.
