Veľký Kýr lies in the Danubian Lowland on both banks of the old riverbed of the Nitra. The old riverbed of the Nitra flows through the center of Veľký Kýr. The location thus marks the beginning of a history shaped by medieval tradition, religious buildings, archaeological traces, and local wine tradition.
History and Culture
The local history can be traced through an early written reference: Veľký Kýr was first documented in writing in 1113. In a charter of King Coloman, it is mentioned under the name Ker. Through this charter, the village was transferred to Zobor Monastery. The name Ker is thus associated with the transfer of the village to Zobor Monastery in a charter of King Coloman from 1113.
Among the significant religious buildings is the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Veľký Kýr. It is a Baroque church created in 1768 through the complete reconstruction of an older medieval church. The church contains a stone baptismal font from the mid-19th century. The building is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.
The Trinity Chapel in Veľký Kýr is a late Baroque chapel dating from 1793. Its Louis XVI-style altar features a painting of the Holy Trinity from 1820. In addition to the church buildings, the “Vojenská stanica” archaeological site is another cultural site in Veľký Kýr. It is associated with registration number ÚZPF 346/0.
Wine
The historic wine cellar lane in Veľký Kýr is located 150 meters west of Veľký Kýr railway station. Its location is therefore clearly defined within the village. The Wine Festival in Veľký Kýr includes the historic wine cellar lane with 72 wine cellars. The festival is organized by an association of local winemakers. The 15th edition of the festival has been announced. The wine cellar lane, the number of cellars, and the local organizers form the specific cornerstones of the wine tradition in Veľký Kýr.
