Šarkan between floodplains, vineyards and castle history

Šarkan is located in the southeastern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina uplands. The cadastral area encompasses different landscape regions: its northern part consists of the marshy floodplains of the Paríž stream. The stream flows through the cadastral area of Šarkan and empties into the Hron. Extensive arable land, vineyards with wine cellars, grassland, as well as areas and linear elements of landscape greenery surround the built-up area. Agricultural land, waterscapes and viticulture therefore lie side by side in the immediate surroundings of the village.

Landscape

Near Šarkan lies the Parížske močiare area. It is a 590-hectare protected area under the jurisdiction of the CHKO Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The connection to the Paríž stream thus extends from the marshy floodplains in the northern part of the cadastral area to a nearby protected area. The region’s winemaking traditions are also expressed in the municipal coat of arms: the coat of arms of Šarkan combines the motif of a grape with the agricultural traditions of the municipality, particularly its winemaking traditions.

Culture and history

The Roman Catholic Church of the Virgin Mary in Šarkan dates from 1810. It is a branch church of the Gbelce parish. A late Baroque Pietà with a cross from the second half of the 18th century is registered in Šarkan as an immovable cultural monument. The castle is also part of the village’s history: it was built by the Koller family in 1827. The remains of the castle include a unique 19th-century wall. The fence on the eastern side of the castle is decorated with round towers.

The reconstructed and expanded castle estate in Šarkan began operating in 2014 under the name HOTEL CHÂTEAU ŠARKAN. HOTEL CHÂTEAU ŠARKAN contains a restaurant, a bar, a salon and a conference room. The castle, its surviving structural elements and the castle estate later opened under this name therefore form part of a shared local history.

In the village district of Divá, an architecturally interesting wooden bell tower stands at the entrance to the village. It complements Šarkan’s ecclesiastical and historic architectural heritage with another independent structure.

Things to do

A regional cycling route, stage 5, also passes through Šarkan. It runs from Štúrovo via Kamenica nad Hronom, Kamenín, Bruty, Svodín, Šarkan, Ľubá, Belá and Nána back to Štúrovo. The cycling stage is 65.4 kilometres long and has 335 metres of elevation gain. The listed cycling stage is not suitable for road bikes.
