Chotín – Archaeology, Church and Protected Nature

Chotín combines archaeology, sacred architectural history and protected nature with an educational trail and museums. For visitors, the archaeological sites, the church’s historic furnishings, the inland sand communities and Chotínske jazero emerge as clearly distinguishable themes.

Culture and History

The Disznólegelö site contains a Thracian burial ground from the Early Iron Age with 310 inhumation graves and 152 cremation graves. The Felsö - Kenderföld site contains a significant Celtic burial ground with 47 graves, including 4 cremation graves and 43 inhumation graves. The Delihegy site contains a large settlement from the Roman period. The Chotín burial ground is one of the largest burial grounds of the Hallstatt culture; up to 1,000 graves are believed to be located there.

The Calvinist church of Chotín was built in 1792 in the Classical style with several Baroque architectural elements. It was repaired between 1857 and 1862 and has been preserved to this day, with minor later alterations and repairs. Its furnishings include a wooden pulpit with a sounding board, erected in 1857 and decorated with Hungarian folk motifs.

The Podunajské Museum in Komárno displays archaeological material from a Celtic burial ground in Chotín, including a bronze bracelet decorated with filigree ornaments. Chotín is also home to the Lilla Gallery and Village Museum. It houses an ethnological collection belonging to retired teacher Ernő Zajos, as well as various exhibitions. Through local cultural heritage activities in Chotín, pupils were able to learn about traditional activities such as hemp cultivation, bread baking, rope-making, broom-making, woodcarving and weaving.

Nature and Lake

The Chotínske piesky nature reserve has also been a site of European importance since 2004. It comprises inland sand communities with numerous endangered plant and animal species. Rest areas have been established around Chotínske jazero. Fishing spots have been designated at Chotínske jazero.

Educational Trail and Orientation

The educational trail to the sights of Chotín can be walked in both directions. The numbering of its stations is intended for orientation and precise location on the map, not to indicate the order. Delihegy is one of the stations on the educational trail to the sights of Chotín. Accordingly, both the Roman settlement and the educational trail belong together there as a named station, without the numbering establishing a prescribed sequence.

There are specific reference points for reaching the educational trail: a local bus stop on the Komárno–Štúrovo route is 200 m from the educational trail to the sights of Chotín. Chotín railway station is 2.5 km from the educational trail to the sights of Chotín.
