Kolárovo Hotels – Floating Water Mill and Culture

Kolárovo can be experienced in a particularly tangible way through its floating water mill. It is the last floating mill in Slovakia and stands on a former channel of the Little Danube. The Water Milling Museum is located on the site. Among other exhibits, it features a unique machine for making fishing nets, considered one of the first of its kind in the world.

Culture

The Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is part of Kolárovo’s religious architectural history. It was built in 1723–1724 on the site of an older Gothic church and enlarged in 1772. Its interior features a late Baroque barrel vault. The Chapel of Saint Rosalia is a Baroque building dating from the 1750s; its tower was added at the end of the 19th century.

The House of Folk Traditions is a reconstructed old farmhouse with historically furnished interiors. It provides space for various folk crafts, art storage, and activities dedicated to maintaining and preserving folk traditions. The town’s cultural centre is also devoted to local culture: Every year, it hosts several exhibitions featuring works by well-known amateur artists, painters, and photographers, co-organises Kolárovská lýra, an international amateur singing competition, and works to preserve and promote local folk traditions as well as Slovak, Hungarian, and European cultural values.

A local tradition dating back more than a hundred years is the Turíčny dance procession. It is considered one of the municipality’s most important social events and an important means of preserving Hungarian identity.

Nature and Water

The nature trail at the water mill is primarily intended for visitors to the mill, extends their stay in Kolárovo amid nature, and provides information about the local fauna, flora, and the history associated with Kolárovo. It also provides information about the natural, landscape, and historical values of the area surrounding the Lodný mlyn national cultural monument site.

The ruins of Žabí hrad, originally called Hrad Mieru, are located in a wooded wetland near the confluence of the Little Danube and the Váh. The waterway itself is also part of the local landscape: The entire Little Danube is navigable from Vrakuňa, a district of Bratislava, to Kolárovo.

A covered bridge built entirely of wood leads to the floating water mill. As a national cultural monument, it is open to the general public and welcomes visitors Monday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. Guided tours take place every 15 minutes.

Events

The events calendar also includes announced dates: A XII Beach Volleyball Tournament was announced in Kolárovo. The Kolárovský jarmok and Hody were announced as their 41st editions.
