Podhradie: Topoľčiansky hrad Castle and the Považský Inovec Mountains

Podhradie lies on the eastern edge of the Považský Inovec Mountains, above the upper course of the Slivnica stream. The village landscape includes Topoľčiansky hrad Castle, paths in the Považský Inovec Mountains and the Vinište Natura 2000 site. Historical architectural and settlement traces therefore meet a landscape shaped by marked trails, viewpoints and a protected occurrence of common juniper here.

Culture

The oldest construction phase of Topoľčiansky hrad Castle dates from the third quarter of the 13th century. After the owners abandoned the castle in the 18th century, its chapel served as the parish church for the inhabitants of Podhradie. Part of a ground-level room with a Renaissance brick floor has survived from this chapel. A window in a massive niche, walled up in its lower section, also remains from the former chapel.

Historical traces can also be found in the surrounding area. In nearby Úhrad, visible remains of the original fortification and an earthwork have been preserved; the site also offers views of Topoľčiansky hrad Castle and its surroundings. Above the former settlement of Hrnovce, from which Podhradie later developed, there is a limestone-dolomite rock. Historical activities in Podhradie included agriculture, weaving, lime burning and the manufacture of wooden implements. A branch route led through the cadastral area of Podhradie towards Panská Javorina.

Landscape

The Vinište Natura 2000 site (SKUEV0021) lies in the cadastral area of Podhradie. It covers 5.80 hectares and is protected under protection level 3 to preserve stands of common juniper. Its location on the eastern edge of the Považský Inovec Mountains and above the upper course of the Slivnica remains a precise geographical reference point for the village.

Trails and viewpoints

The Považský Inovec nature trail passes through Podhradie. It is self-guided, open year-round and linear, has a moderate to high difficulty level and is approximately 60 kilometres long, including the municipal branches. In addition, a nature trail from Podhradie leads to Topoľčiansky hrad Castle; the walk takes no more than 10 minutes.

The tower of Topoľčiansky hrad Castle can still be climbed today. From there, views extend over the Nitra Valley, the Tríbeč and Vtáčnik mountain ranges, and the Považský Inovec Mountains. On Panská Javorina stands a 16-metre-high observation tower with three levels.

The ascent to Panská Javorina can begin in Podhradie. The described route first follows a blue-marked trail through the municipality, then a yellow-marked trail to the Chatová oblasti Dolné Zľavy and onwards to the Jamka saddle, where it joins a green-marked trail. Another route from Podhradie to Panská Javorina leads across the meadows near the settlement of Biela Bukovina; drinking-water supplies and a monument from the Second World War are mentioned there.

Getting there

The bus stop is located directly below Topoľčiansky hrad Castle, next to the church. Free parking is available beside the castle church. A regional bus service connects Topoľčany with Podhradie.
