Lužany between the Považský Inovec Mountains and archaeological history

The first written mention of Lužany dates from 1249. The village lies below the Považský Inovec Mountains and in the central part of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina loess hill country. The Hlavinka stream flows through Lužany, and the Hlohovec–Topoľčany state road also runs through the village.

Culture and history

A firmly established cultural landmark is the “Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie” church, the dominant landmark of Lužany. Its patronal feast is the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church belongs to the Veľké Ripňany parish.

Archaeology

Various archaeological traces have been found in the territory of the present-day municipality: a skeletal burial ground of the Nitra Culture from the Early Bronze Age, a burial mound cemetery of the Velatice culture, and archaeological sites of the Early Neolithic culture. The skeletal burial ground and the burial mound cemetery refer to different types of archaeological features, while the classifications as Nitra and Velatice cultures preserve the respective cultural associations named. The settlements in Lužany are known as the “Lužianska skupina”. The archaeological site in Lužany was inhabited around 2000 BC. More than 50 houses are characteristic of the settlements of the “Lužianska skupina”. Outside the built-up area of Lužany, the municipal territory consists of fertile agricultural land. Lužany is listed as an archaeological site in an inventory of the tourism potential of the Topoľčany District. Lužany is also recorded as an archaeological site.
