Nemečky between Forest, Water and Culture

Nemečky lies below the eastern slopes and foothills of the Považský Inovec in a relatively deep valley of the Chocina stream. The stream runs on both sides of the village, shaping its distinctive location between the valley and the wooded mountain ridges.

Nature

Nemečky is surrounded by distinctive wooded ridges of the lateral foothills of the Považský Inovec. Brown hares, wild rabbits, European ground squirrels, stoats and red foxes live at the forest edges. These animal species are therefore just as much part of the village’s natural surroundings as the forest ridges that define its landscape.

Culture

The oldest traces date far back into prehistory. A Neolithic vessel dating from 4000 to 2000 BC was found in the Luknišová area near Nemečky. Remains of a settlement dating from approximately the 3rd millennium BC were discovered in the Nemečky area, including pottery fragments from the Potiská culture. Pottery fragments from the older Eneolithic period were also found at the Lány site near Luknišová; they are attributed to the so-called Ludanice group.

Visible religious monuments include the village bell tower with a bell dating from 1864 and a stone statue of the Virgin Mary with the Child dating from 1714. The Sedembolestnej Panny Márie Chapel is one of Nemečky’s religious cultural monuments. There is also a wooden cross in the village that has been there since time immemorial.

Near Nemečky, the devotional image Obrázok stands at a forest-road crossroads. In the 17th and 18th centuries, numerous believers stopped there on their way to pilgrimage sites in the Považie region.

By the Water

The Nemečky Reservoir is used for fishing and visited by many anglers every year. The area around the reservoir is suitable for boating. Since 2002, the Ľadové medvede have regularly gathered there to ceremonially open the bathing season for winter swimmers. Thus, fishing, boating and a winter-swimming tradition that is still maintained today coexist on the same body of water.

Trails

The Považský Inovec nature trail passes through Nemečky. It is a self-guided, text- and graphic-based linear trail that can be walked year-round. Including the municipal branches, the nature trail is approximately 60 km long.

The blue Duchonka cycling route 2101 runs around the Nemečky Reservoir. From Nemečky, the reservoir can be reached on foot via a paved road in approximately 15 minutes.
