Solčany: Hotels, Culture and Nature

The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints in Solčany was built in the Gothic style and was first documented in writing in 1397. Its ground plan is cross-shaped; Baroque stone surrounds of all portals have been preserved on both the exterior and interior to this day. The crypt is currently inaccessible; twelve members of the Odescalchi family are buried there.

Culture

A festive women's costume from Solčany dating from the beginning of the 20th century features colourful embroidery, lace-trimmed sleeves and two aprons. On feast days, a narrow lower apron known as a “kuchynka” and a wide upper apron were worn. In Solčany, peasant women practised bobbin lace-making.

The Odescalchi family acquired the estate at the beginning of the 19th century and, after 1818, had a representative Neoclassical manor house built there, surrounded by an extensive park. The Neoclassical manor house from the early 19th century, built after 1818, stands on the main road in the centre of Solčany; its portico is decorated in the gable field with reliefs depicting mythological scenes. The manor house is abandoned and falling into disrepair.

In the centre of Solčany, near the Roman Catholic Church of All Saints, stands a monument to those who fell in the First World War. The sandstone group depicts Jesus Christ holding a collapsing wounded soldier in his arms.

Nature

The park next to the manor house in Solčany contains numerous rare trees and shrubs, including a large Amur cork tree. The Solčiansky háj Nature Reserve lies about 3 km from Solčany on the edge of the Tribeč forest complex; it was designated in 1984 and covers 7.07 ha. In the cadastral territory of Solčany, the reserve protects preserved natural oak forests as well as forest-steppe and rock communities on acidic soils in the Tribeč Mountains.

Routes

Solčany lies along a currently signposted Slovak route of the Cyril and Methodius Way. It leads from Nitra via Jelenec and Solčany to Bojná, and continues via Inovecká chata and Skalka pri Trenčíne to Žítková in the Czech Republic.

Cycle route 5115 – Sľažany–Zlatno–Solčany leads from a castle below Mišov vrch and Medvedí vrch, then continues along an asphalt road to Solčany.

Solčiansky skladaník is a festive cake with a tradition passed down through generations in Solčany and the surrounding municipalities. It was brought to the bride and groom's family for wedding guests on the eve of the wedding and is still baked for important occasions today.
