Bojná: Valy Hillfort and Archaeological Museum

Bojná is a place where cultural history, sacred art and the landscape offer distinct perspectives side by side.

History

In the 9th century, Valy Hillfort was an important production, trade and missionary centre, as well as the seat of the Slavic social elite. The archaeological site was also a fortified settlement containing the earliest evidence of the Christianisation of the ancestors of today’s population. The reconstructed eastern gate of Valy Hillfort is presented as the largest reconstruction of a Slavic gate in Central Europe.

The open-air exhibition at Valy Hillfort features a reconstruction of the western fortification and model reconstructions of Slavic sunken houses at the site of the original find. It also includes a reconstructed clay oven, a smithy and a storage pit. Access to Valy Hillfort is free of charge year-round; the site is located approximately 5 km from Bojná.

Museum

The Archaeological Museum of Great Moravia in Bojná was established by the municipality in 2012. It is operated as a museum exhibition under the Slovak National Museum and is housed, together with a regional information centre, in a dedicated area of the municipal office in the centre of the village. Original finds from Valy Hillfort can be seen at the Archaeological Museum of Great Moravia in Bojná.

The museum also offers a multilingual digital exhibition in which historical figures from the period of Great Moravia address visitors and explain life and traditions at that time. The digital exhibition is available in Slovak, English and German.

Sacred Art

Valy Hillfort is a destination on the Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route and Pilgrimage Route, which is certified by the Council of Europe.

The Church of All Saints in Bojná was originally a Gothic sacred building and was later remodelled in the Classicist style. It has a Classicist high altar from the late 18th century featuring a painting of All Saints, as well as a Classicist pulpit from the late 18th century with a square parapet decorated with carved rosettes and a sculpture of the holy archangel Michael on the canopy.
