The Dunajec Gorge (Prielom Dunajca) is a protected zone of Pieniny National Park in the surroundings of Červený Kláštor.

Water and trails

The rafting trip on the Dunajec begins in the municipality of Červený Kláštor, passes through the Dunajec Gorge and ends in the village of Lesnica. It takes place on traditional wooden rafts. After the rafting trip on the Dunajec, visitors can return to the starting point by shuttle, bicycle or on foot via the educational trail along the Dunajec. The Prielom Dunajca educational trail begins at the entrance to the Dunajec Gorge, approximately 0.4 km below Červený Kláštor Monastery, and is 7.5 km long. In addition, the Pieninská cesta cycling route connects Červený Kláštor with the Polish town of Szczawnica. The route network thus combines a river section, an educational trail and a cycling route, each with its own name and course. The starting point of the rafting trip is in Červený Kláštor, while Lesnica is named as the village at the end of the trip. Szczawnica is part of the described cycling connection and is located in Poland.

Culture and history

Červený Kláštor Monastery was founded in 1319. Its history includes both the period of the Carthusians and that of the Camaldolese. In front of the monastery is Pieninské lipy Park, designated as a protected area and home to 19 old, rare lime trees. At the Červený Kláštor Museum, the herbarium of the “flying monk” Cyprián from 1766 contains a total of 283 pressed plants described in five languages. The year the monastery was founded, the two periods of religious orders and the herbarium from 1766 thus mark different chronological layers of the local history.

The Červený Kláštor Museum is accessible by car or bus. There is no rail service in Červený Kláštor.
