Lendak: Churches, Folk Culture and Hotels
Lendak combines visible history with protected landscapes and regional events. St. Nicholas Church in Lendak dates from the early 14th century. Inside is a Gothic Madonna, also known as the “Lendak Madonna”, which is dated to around 1420. A crowned, crucified Jesus on the cross from the first half of the 13th century, dating to around 1235, can also be seen there.
Culture
The Múzeum ľudovej kultúry is a museum of traditional folk architecture that preserves the memory, history and traditions of Lendak. Its authentic exhibitions illustrate traditional housing, material culture, folk costumes and the way of life of the village’s inhabitants in past centuries. The museum is open to the public daily year-round from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Another historical landmark is the former monastery. Baron Andrej Horváth-Palocs had the building extensively remodelled in the Empire style from 1812 to 1814. After it was sold, the former monastery was converted into a manor house. The chronology of the remodelling and its subsequent use are therefore part of the building’s historical stages.
The transmission of local traditions is also rooted in Lendak. The preschool folklore group teaches children Goral songs, dances, greetings and proverbs. The children perform at various events.
Nature
The natural areas lie in different directions around the village: the Belianske lúky nature reserve is located southeast of Lendak, while the Pálenica nature reserve lies to the west. Near Lendak, the Diviačia obora wild boar enclosure offers the opportunity to observe wild boars in a safe, fenced area; directly next to it is the Belianske lúky educational trail on the cycle path between Tatranská Kotlina and Spišská Belá. At its beginning stands a wooden shelter with the signpost “Šarpanec – odbočka Lendak”.
On the Way
The forest road near Altánok na Farskom is used as a cycle route. The Altánok na Farskom rest area has a lockable bicycle rack. The shelters that have been built have fire pits for roasting.
Events
The traditional Juliáles festival has been held in Lendak since 2007. A musical performance was planned as part of the Juliáles 2026 project, a folklore festival in Lendak. Another event held that year was Ľӯndacko važeska 2026 in Lendak, a goulash cooking competition that people could register for.
