Tvarožná: Churches, History and Views of the High Tatras

Tvarožná combines a clearly identifiable location with a long local history and several surviving reminders from different centuries. The village lies southeast of Kežmarok in the Vrbovská pahorkatina, in the Poprad Basin and at the northwestern foot of the Levočské planiny in the Levočské vrchy. As early as 1271, Tvarožná held town privileges and was administered under German-Saxon law. This historical development and the location between the Poprad Basin and the Levočské vrchy shape the way the village is understood.

History and Townscape

The history is particularly vivid in the village’s churches and older buildings. The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle dates back to the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was extensively rebuilt in the High and Late Gothic styles. Its furnishings include a bronze baptismal font for which the church is known. Several original burgher houses from the 17th to the 19th century have been preserved in Tvarožná. They complement the sacred landmarks with examples of the village’s older local architecture.

The historic townscape also includes a Baroque sandstone column erected in 1730, topped with a statue of the Immaculate Conception. Tvarožná also has a Protestant history. The Protestant church was built in 1778 in the Baroque-Classical style. In the 17th century, Protestants who were pressured by the Counter-Reformation were also allowed to build a wooden articulated church in Tvarožná. This building has not survived. The village’s history thus places preserved churches and burgher houses alongside a historically documented building that no longer exists.

The protected Levočské vrchy bird area is part of the landscape context. Parts of Tvarožná’s cadastral territory lie within this protected area. Tvarožná’s geographical location can therefore be described both through the neighbouring landscape regions and through this protected area.

A specific connection to the surrounding landscape begins in Vrbov. From there, an easy walking excursion leads to Tvarožná. The route passes through a pine forest and reaches meadows above Tvarožná as it climbs. The forest section, ascent and open meadows are all part of the same described route. The meadows offer views of Tvarožná, Ľubica and Kežmarok, as well as the High Tatras. The route thus connects the starting point in Vrbov with the village area of Tvarožná and the higher meadows above the village.

Local Information
