Fričovce’s sights include a Renaissance Kastle, churches, and a park with ponds, water features, old trees, and natural corners suitable for walks and relaxation.

Culture

The Fričovce Renaissance Kastle was built between 1623 and 1630 by the master builder Michal Sorger from Prešov for the nobleman Valent Berthóty. Its blind arcades were originally decorated with 150 mythological and historical figures. The depictions came from antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the modern era. A sgraffito decoration has also been preserved; it is one of the rarest of its kind in Slovakia. The Kastle is open to the public, including through guided tours that present its history, architecture, and unique sgraffito decoration.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew in Fričovce was built in 1737–1738 on the site of a Gothic church that had previously stood there and dated from the 14th or 15th century. Its furnishings include an altar created in 1752 by the master J. Kebling from Levoča. Beneath the church is a crypt considered to be the burial place of nobles from the Fričovce branch of the Berthóty family. A burial chapel was built in front of the church in 1811. It has the form of a small mausoleum and is designed in the Empire style.

Another sacred sight is the Roman Catholic Church of the Three Martyrs of Košice in Fričovce, built in 1993. North of Fričovce lies Hradisko, an archaeological site with finds from a Slavic hillfort dating from the early Middle Ages.

Nature

The Fričovce Kastle includes a park of approximately 5 hectares with ponds, water features, old trees, and numerous natural corners suitable for walks and relaxation. The parkland complements the historic buildings with a spacious setting in which bodies of water and mature trees define the landscape.

Fričovce is a starting point for access to the Kanné Valley. A marked hiking trail leads through this valley from Šindliar to the Branisko ridge. Thus, both access to the valley and the onward trail are part of the local landscape and hiking references.

Location

Fričovce lies along the route of the D1 motorway. According to the municipal assessment, this location contributes to good accessibility. The higher parts of Fričovce offer beautiful panoramic views.
