Hermanovce: Hotels, Cultural Monuments and Hiking Trails

Hermanovce combines architectural and commemorative heritage with trails leading into the landscape of the Šarišská vrchovina. Between a Baroque church, traces of the historic nobility and marked hiking trails, the village presents a setting where history and nature meet within a compact thematic area.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is a Baroque church built in 1650. It stands on the site of an older Gothic church, which was already mentioned in 1438, and was restored between 1860 and 1864. The church is regarded by the municipality as the defining landmark of Hermanovce. In front of the entrance stands the Gloriet, an artistic funerary monument dating from 1811. The structure combines the function of a garden pavilion with that of a symbolic and actual family mausoleum. In the Central Register of the Monuments Fund, the Gloriet is listed under number 292/2 as a national cultural monument and is considered an important sight in Hermanovce.

Another reminder of the village’s history is preserved in the memorial room dedicated to Štefan Hlaváč and František Majoch. It commemorates two priests from Hermanovce and displays vestments, a grave cross, books and photographs from the life of Štefan Hlaváč. The section dedicated to František Majoch documents, through photographs, the places where the priest died and was buried. The historical depth of the village reaches back even further: a deed concerning an inheritance division from 1320 names Hermanovce as “Villa Hermanni superior et inferior”, meaning Upper and Lower Hermanovce.

Noble Estate and Village Centre

Kaštieľ Péchy is a historic noble estate in Hermanovce. Its history dates back to the 18th century, and it is also regarded as a unique example of a noble residence with a rich cultural heritage. Kaštieľ Péchy stands in the middle of a three-hectare English park. The estate is privately owned and accessible by prior arrangement. In the village centre, publicly accessible remains of the farmyard belonging to the Péchy estate, known as Pánsky dvor, have also been preserved.

Landscape and Hiking Trails

Hermanovce lies on the slopes of the Šarišská vrchovina, whose natural beauty attracts visitors from the wider surrounding area. North of the village, at the foot of Kucmanka Hill, there is a Stations of the Cross. For hikers, a red-marked trail begins at the cemetery, by the bus stop. It leads via Chrasť, at 773.5 m above sea level, and Lazy, at 853.9 m, to Mount Mindžová, which reaches 920 m, and continues to the municipality of Tichý potok.

The Hermanovce–Chotárna hiking trail opened in 2013. The route towards Chotárna offers views of the Čergov and the valley near Renčišov. The Chotárna cottage lies along this route and is visited by passers-by as well as hikers who come to the region for a weekend and stay there overnight.
