Preschau: Culture and Urban History of Prešov

The Rákociho Palace in Prešov presents Renaissance art, precious clocks, weapons and means of payment, as well as the city’s thousand-year history. The palace also houses a collection of historical and more recent firefighting equipment that is unique in Slovakia in this complete form, complemented by the history of firefighting. Another exhibition showcases the everyday and festive life of a Šariš village, including textiles, agriculture, crafts, housing, work and leisure.

Culture

Solivar in Prešov is a national cultural monument and a complex of technical facilities dating from the 17th century, used to extract and boil salt from brine. The Múzeum Solivar offers visitors a guided tour of the entire Solivar site. One of the preserved horse-driven hoists above the Leopold shaft in Solivar dates from the 19th century and is open to the public.

City

The Co-Cathedral of Saint Nicholas is the oldest building in Prešov and the city’s only surviving Gothic sacred building. A 360-degree panorama of Prešov can be seen from the tower; reaching it requires climbing 220 steps to a height of 70 metres. Among the preserved objects in the co-cathedral is an especially valuable Gothic sculpture of the Crucified Christ from the first half of the 14th century. The Orthodox Synagogue on Okružná Street in Prešov was built at the end of the 19th century in the Neo-Romanesque-Moorish style.

History

The Evangelical College in Prešov is an important monument to the history of Protestant education. Its assembly hall, called Dvorana, houses the historic holdings of the college library, with more than 40,000 volumes. A monument erected at the Evangelical College in 1908 commemorates the victims of the Caraffa blood court of 1687.
