Kamienka: Cultural Monuments, Nature and Cycling Trail
Kamienka lies between the Spišská Magura and Ľubovnianska vrchovina mountain ranges. The municipality stretches through the valley of the Kamninka stream.
Landscape
The Kamienska tisina nature reserve lies within the cadastral area of Kamienka. It preserves original fir-beech and beech-fir stands with occurrences of the rare yew tree. The nature reserve is not open to the public.
History
As early as the Middle Ages, an important trade route from Poland passed through Kamienka. In historical forms of the name, the settlement appears in 1315 under the name „Petri villa“ and in 1342 under the name „Lapidis“. The history of the settlement therefore reaches back to these medieval names documented in writing.
Culture
The three national cultural monuments in Kamienka include the Greek Catholic Church of „Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla“ and the „Prícestná kaplnka“ Chapel. The church is a Neoclassical building dating from 1790. It has a single nave and a straight-ended apse; the tower is integrated into the gabled façade.
The „Prícestná kaplnka“ Chapel is a Baroque-Neoclassical chapel from the late 18th century. It stands in the western part of Kamienka and continues to serve its religious purpose. Another historic chapel is the „Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky“ Chapel, a national cultural monument dating from 1760.
The cultural heritage of Kamienka also includes the Barvinok folklore ensemble. Through songs, dances, traditional-culture programmes and church singing, it preserves and presents the customs and traditions of the municipality and of the Rusyn minority. The Dubne natural amphitheatre is intended as a venue for a folklore festival celebrating Rusyn culture.
Cycling Trail and Recreation
The „Cykloturistický chodník Kamienka“ cycling trail leads to the Kvašná voda I. (Ščava) mineral spring. The paved trail is 295.13 metres long, begins in the Šťava district and ends at a connection to an existing dirt road. It was built in the cadastral area of the municipality of Kamienka to support cycling tourism and recreational activities.
