Nová Ľubovňa: Ľubovnianske Kúpele and Goral tradition

From Nová Ľubovňa, Ľubovnianske Kúpele can be reached via a cycle path that runs through the natural landscape of the Levoča Mountains. Ľubovnianske Kúpele is a recreational and spa settlement in the Spišsko-šarišské medzihorie, in the valley of the Ľubovnianka stream. The settlement has freely accessible mineral springs. The mineral water from Ľubovnianske Kúpele is bottled and sold under the name Ľubovnianka.

Nature

In the settlement of Ľubovnianske Kúpele, which belongs to the municipalities of Nová Ľubovňa and Chmeľnica, an educational trail with six stations runs through part of the historic forest park; behind the settlement there is a ski resort with three ski lifts. The historic forest park contains the only four documented specimens of the Pyrenean pine in Slovakia. One of these specimens has eleven trunks.

Culture and music

Through its performances and activities, the folklore group FSk Taľar represents and preserves the traditional costume of Nová Ľubovňa. The Goral tradition in Nová Ľubovňa also has a clearly preserved musical foundation: there are four original basic melodies here, to which most humorous, wedding and occasional songs of the Goral tradition are sung.

Pastrnoci preserves a living archive of Goral songs and dances. The group performs at various cultural events organized by the municipality, as well as at social and family occasions in the wider area.

The oldest folk music tradition in the municipality emerged in the 1920s as the Valigurských family band. Several of its musicians later performed with the Pastrnik folklore group and the Pastrnoci folk music ensemble.

Architectural history

There are three chapels in the built-up area of the municipality of Nová Ľubovňa. The chapel of “Sedembolestnej Panny Márie” was built in 1846 and is the oldest chapel in Nová Ľubovňa. It stands on the upper edge of Nová Ľubovňa on the road to Jakubany.

The church in Nová Ľubovňa also reflects several phases of alterations in its history: it was remodelled in 1615, 1823, 1857, 1934 and 1987.
