Altlublau: Castle, Open-Air Museum and Historic Cultural Sites

Culture

Below the castle lies the Ľubovniansky skanzen, an open-air museum of folk architecture with 25 structures. The visit takes 45 minutes. On Zámocká Street in Stará Ľubovňa, behind the skanzen grounds below Ľubovňa Castle, you will find the Michal Strenk Military Exhibition. It features realistically arranged trenches, bunkers, artillery batteries and military equipment. In terms of content, the exhibition therefore ranges from constructed facilities to military hardware. At the same time, it commemorates those who fell in the Second World War, as well as the involvement of local people in the antifascist resistance in the region and worldwide.

Visits

A visit to Ľubovňa Castle takes 80 minutes. It can be undertaken with a guided tour or independently using an accompanying text. The castle can be reached by car; from the centre of Stará Ľubovňa, a red-marked hiking trail leads there on foot in about 30 minutes. The two stated approaches and the separately listed visiting times make the schedule and practical framework of a visit understandable without prescribing a particular order.

Architecture

The Dom ľubovnianskeho mešťana is located in a historic burgher house dating from the 17th century. Its architectural features include Renaissance elements, original barrel vaults, stucco decoration and medieval cellars from the 15th century. The exhibition also includes an original black kitchen. A visit to the Dom ľubovnianskeho mešťana also includes a visit to St. Nicholas Church. The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas is a Gothic church dating from the late 13th century. Visits to its interior are organised by the tourist information centre.

History

Ľubovňa Castle was built at the beginning of the 14th century. Another historic site is the cemetery with a Neo-Gothic chapel from the early 20th century. The cemetery is entered through a small building called Ciduk hadin. The wooden Church of the Archangel Michael dates from 1833. The cemetery was reconstructed in 2001 and is enclosed along its entire perimeter. The cemetery contains figurative ornaments such as lions and eagles. Thus, architectural history, cemetery architecture and individual artistic details come together in a shared spatial setting at this site.
