Bolešov: Natural Monument, Reservoir and Hotels

Bolešov reveals its special features through a combination of landscapes, trails, water and architectural history. The municipality is part of the Ilava Basin and partly extends into the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. Dračia studňa lies in the Bolešov Valley and is a protected natural monument. In 1993, it was placed under protection to preserve a tuff mound as a georelief formation. The tuff mound is considered the largest in the White Carpathians. The natural monument includes waterfalls that are particularly visible in spring after the snow melts; in winter, beautiful icicles form there.

Trails and Water

The Bolešov–Krivoklát educational trail can be reached by bus to Bolešov and then on foot for 4.5 km along a green-marked hiking trail. The route involves an elevation gain of 95 m. Another route connection is the Trenčiansky okruh, which passes through Bolešov. During the summer months, the Bolešov Gilianka Reservoir is used for swimming and fishing.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint Andrew the Apostle is the parish church of Bolešov. It was built in 1937–1939 according to the design of the architect Michal Milan Harminc and consecrated in 1939. The main and side altars with mosaics date from the time of construction.

The Bolešov Manor House was originally built as a Renaissance manor house in the 17th century. In the 18th century, it was remodelled in the Baroque style and given a Romantic makeover in 1870–1880. It is the oldest architectural monument of the formerly independent municipality of Piechov, which is now part of Bolešov.

Annual cultural and social events held in Bolešov include Bolešovské hody. The Jewish cemetery lies behind JRD Bolešov. Nearby is the church of Pominovec in the cadastral area of Sedmerovec, between Bolešov and Pruské, amid fields. It can be reached via a field road from Sedmerovec or via a paved road from the former railway station.
